All fire extinguishers should be maintained to the British Standard BS5306-3. Extensive checks and servicing needs to be carried out annually to ensure that the extinguishers are safe and will always function in an emergency.

 

 

There are five main types of fire extinguishers

 

 

Water Fire Extinguishers

Water fire extinguishers are for use on fires fuelled by solid material such as coal, wood, paper etc. These fires are known as 'Class A' fires.

 

CO2 Fire Extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguishers are for use on fires fuelled by flammable liquid such as solvents, oil, fats etc. These are fires are known as 'Class B' fires. CO2 extinguishers are also efficient fighters of electrical fires.
 

Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam fire extinguishers are for use on Class A and B fires. These are fire fuelled by solid material such as coal, wood, paper, straw etc (Class A) and by flammable liquids such as fats, solvents, paints etc (Class B).
 

Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Dry Powder fire extinguisher are for use on Class A , B and C fires. These are fire fuelled by solid material such as wood, paper, straw etc (Class A), by flammable liquids such as solvents & paints etc (Class B) and for extinguishing gases such as methane & propane etc (Class C).
 

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers   

Wet Chemical fire extinguishers are for ideal use on Class F fires making them perfect for catering businesses and industrial kitchens. These are fire fuelled by cooking oil and deep-fat fryers (Class F).

 

Fire Blankets

Fire blankets are ideal for use in the home and for commercial applications. They are available in a range of sizes to suit different needs. Fire blankets are usually installed in kitchen areas ready for use on chip pan fires, waste paper bin fires and burning clothes.
